IC 1805
Object Type:
Open cluster, Emission nebula
Constellation:
Cassiopeia
Magnitude:
6.5
Size:
60'

These two objects are sometimes referred to as the "Soul Nebula" or "Embryo Nebula" (IC 1848, on the left) and the "Heart Nebula" (IC 1805, on the right). The IC numbers actually refer to the open clusters, but they are commonly used to refer to the nebulosity as well. Together they are sometimes referred to as the "Double Nebula." The integrated magnitude of 6.5 for each object refers to the open clusters which are easily seen in small telescopes, but the nebulosity is much fainter and requires telescopes of moderately large aperture to be seen. IC 1848 and  IC 1805 are 6900 and 7200 light-years from the solar system, respectively.

Instrument: Nikkor 300mm f/4 lens/STL-11000M/Astrodon LRGB filters
F-ratio: f/5.6
Exposures:
RRGB: R 14 x 20 minutes: G 12 x 5 minutes: B 12 x 5 minutes: GB binned 2x2.
Date:
October 31 and November 19, 2008
Location:
Borrego Springs, California, and Landers, California, USA
Technical Notes:
Individual exposures were sigma combined and the RGB image created in Registar 1.0. Russell Croman's A Gaussian Blur of 1 pixel was applied to the RGB image.
Russell Croman's GradientXTerminator plug-in for Photoshop was used to remove gradients.
